Engineered Wood vs Hardwood
It depends on many factors including condition of subfloor, relative to other surfaces such as (cabinets, doors), cost and type of wood, etc.
Hardwood is solid wood all the way through (usually 3/4 in thickness), and it can be sanded and refinish many times. Solid hardwood much easier to repair and it's less expensive. It comes in pre-finished and unfinished forms. However, solid hardwood expands and contracts more.
Engineered wood is done in layers (the top layer is a hardwood veneer and then there are layers of wood which are perpendicular in direction and laminated together (thickness varies from 5/16 to 3/4)). This material is more stable (because of its layers. It's much stronger than solid hardwood. Often, engineered wood can be less expensive. On the other hand, many engineered hardwoods can not be sanded and refinished.
